PART DEUX
Not only do we as designers have to power to promote but it's recently come to my attention anyone has the power to promote and make change. It's as simple as wearing a band t-shirt, your doing something to initiate potential listener ship. I now have this sudden realization I might possibly have the power to bring back dead fashion trends with my own spin. I never said I wanted to be a fashion designer, but I'm sure I can incorporate some tie-die t-shirts into an ad. Corduroy pants, wallet chains, hell maybe I'll turn the yo-yo into a designer fashion statement. As we all know history just repeats itself when it comes to fashion and trends, so is it our decision as we mediate messages through design to set ideals such as fashion? I think so. I've always despised advertising because I don't like being told what I'm supposed to buy, but if you make the options look cool enough I'm not telling them to buy anything. Most of the time celebrities get to enjoy this power, but it's time for us designers to allow our designs to build ideals. Put Johnny Depp in a Canadian tuxedo and it might sell.
Jay Leno brings back the Canadian Tuxedo. Some dude sports the chain. And a psychadelic Band shirt from the Jay Johnson Band.
